Postpartum Blood-loss Measuring Device

Measure is creating a product that will give hospital staff an immediate quantitative measurement of blood lost during childbirth. The current standard practice for calculating this blood loss is through visual estimation.

Postpartum hemorrhage causes 11% of maternal deaths in the US, and is the leading cause of death on the day of birth. 40% of postpartum hemorrhage occurs in low-risk women and it’s estimated that between 50% – 90% of these deaths could be preventable.

The MeaSure device is a vacuum-formed plastic tray with an integrated graduated measuring basin. The tray is placed under the person giving birth immediately after the baby is born. From there, any postpartum hemorrhaging gets drained into a transparent basin that allows hospital staff to see at a glance if there is excess blood loss, and take steps to protect the patient. The device is also equipped with a drain line which allows for easily emptying the contents of the collection basin in the event of excess hemorrhaging. The device also comes with a mesh sieve used to catch any clots or other material that could block the drain line.

“The project was fantastic. It was exciting, working with NextFab made the product design a lot better. They asked great questions, had great ideas and helped me visualize the concepts. They were very collaborative, pleasant, easy to work with, timely, and professional.”
